01 and 02 The images above are from Henry Alken's series SYMPTOMS, rather feeble collections of small puns and wry asides on one lithographic plate. The image A Dose after Dinner may be a possible source for similar motifs in the work of Rudolf Topfer, the Swiss pioneer of the strip cartoon.

The hand colouring is wonderful and has translated well to screen. The prints are 19 x 24cms. Dated 1828.
