The page size is 11 x 18cms. There are two volumes gathering the Cruikshank comic almanacs. The first volume is 1835 - 1843, and the second 1844 - 1853.In this the first year Cruikshank sticks to the conventional choice of subject matter but shows

1 his great abilities to draw the crowd

2 drawing the shops and wall surfaces

3. building up a sense of movement, of conflicting movement, and the results.

 

Use of writing is sparing, and contained within the bounds of the stage scenery.

 

One obvious influence is Hogarth - October coloured by The Harlot's Progress. The Lord Mayor's Show (next screen) is very close to a plate of Hogarth's Idle and Industrious Prentice. July is set in Vauxhall Pleasure Garden and shows awareness of the great Rowlandson drawing.

June shows the Public Days at the Royal Academy Exhibition in London.
