Lawson-Wood is best known for his Merry Monkeys, which, over the years, tended to be repetitive and unchallenging. This set of illustrations to Nursery Rhymes, c1930, show what a range of characters and compositions he was capable of. He has a great sense of composition, and can really draw. The minor mannerisms such as highlit apple cheeks tend to pall, but the vigour of his flying scene above, is a joy to behold.
