page size, 22 x27 cms. Conrad Buff's Dancing Cloud is an extraordinary production with a density and monumentality of surface not usually associated with the lithographic process. His work I used in teaching continuities between the colour illustration and that done in black and white. His figure drawing was highly professional, and almost uncomfortable in its monumentality (a feature of of much 'Thirties art). This idealisation also tends to cloud the humanity of the figures and introduce an unwanted generality. Above all, he has a mesmeric sense of the landscape and how human beings inhabit it.

In the study of the lithographic book, Buff provides a keen sense of how colours can be pushed to a new vibrancy, almost strident in contrasts. I add the monochrome firelight scene to show his range beyond the High American West Landscape.
