Thomas Derrick ( 1885-1954) was a prolific artist and designer with a strong decorative bent, teaching the decorative arts at the Royal College where he himself was taught. Although he shows a tendancy to the bland, he was extraordinary inventive across a range of work, posters, cartoons, and books. He had many connections with English Catholicism. In the same year as Palmerman he completed his large and ponderous canvas, Judgement of Paris, now gracing the Brooklyn Museum. Derrick was at his best with bold and substantial posters in conjunction with another artist for London Transport. There is a Howard Coster portrait of Derrick on the National Portrait Gallery website. Wikipedia lists many of his illustrative commissions. |
