Hans Tisdall, born 1910 Hans John Knox Aufseeser in Munich. He came to London in 1930, fortunate in having an immediate introduction to Frank Pick of London Transport, a friend of his father. Working as a full time painter, he contributed fabric designs for the Edinburgh Weavers, proposing lagre repeats that were influenced more by his mural designs.

In 1951 he designed plaster centaurs for the Pleasure Graden and a giant cockerel (see above). He designed many many book jackets, not least for Cape. He died in 1997.
