Eagle Comic, which was bought for me every week, issued an Annual at Christmas featuring the usual characters but adding more than the usual words and more than the usual worthiness.

Above all, Eagle provided colour for the child's eye that was not available elsehwre in the United Kingdom of the 1950's. It was breathtaking to open up the turgid monochrome daily newspaper (the ghastly Daily Express in my parents' case) and on one day of the week, the red burnished sheet of Dan Dare was revealed.
