ART WORK HOOD MUSEUM DARTMOUTH

SAMPLE AT WORK 1949

Sample was a particular favourite of the first art director Eleanor Treacy and her successor Hank Brennan. His first work commissioned was a painting of San Pedro Harbour in San Francisco in October 1934. In 1937 he was granted sabbatical leave from teaching at the University of Southern California to take on his most ambitious commission, Eight US Ports. As a Regionalist he did not sustain that engagement with FORTUNE after Brennan was succeeded by Will Burtin, and I suspect his later work was typical of Down Home American painting that found little favour generally.
