BBC Year Book Covers

Container Corporation, Kauffer's contribution to the celebrated campaign initiated by Walter Paepke where aspects of company production were visualised by the world's greatest imagemakers, Leger, Cassandre, Stuart Davis, Rivera, Herbert Bayer etc. this exmple JUNE 1941 28 x 35cms.

Cover to a pamphlet produced by the Union of Democratic Control , Victoria St., London Sept.1933, and measuring 14 x 21 cms - Kauffer has found the word RIOT in the word Patriotism.

SECTION B

Dustjacket to Gilbert Cannan, Seven Plays , Martin Secker London 1923, and an early design much influenced by Kauffer's flirtation with Vorticism. The clumsy lettering shows how much he had to learn to achieve integration of letter and image in his designs.


Brochure celebrating The Film Society founded 1925, of which Kauffer was a founder member. He was also on the Council along with Iris Barry, Frank Dobson the sculptor, John Grierson the film-maker, and Ivor Montagu. The brochure measures 10 x 23 cms. It lists films to be seen in each season.

Dustjacket (13 x 19 cms) for L.H.Myers, Strange Glory , Puttnam, London 1936. A novel about a woman and two men "who work out their destiny in the moss-hung forest of Louisiana".


Jacket for Eleanor Elder's Travelling Players, The Story of the Arts League of Service , Muller London 1939;14 x 20 cms; EMK produced paintings and designs for ALS theatrical productions. The ALS was a most energetic and innovatory travelling theatrical company.

SECTION C

 

A poster for the Westminster Press, dated 1922,and reproduced in Erdmand and Braun, Decorative Writing and Arrangement of Lettering, Pitman, London (undated c1923 ) ; and a fine example of Kauffer's abstract style incorporating a firm's logo, with jagged shapes that still recall the influence on him of Wyndham Lewis and Vorticism.
