This period in European culture is a fascinating one with a balance of optimism and the Apocalyptic. Science and mechanics hold many attractions but technologocal developments worried as much as they delighted. It is unreasonable to expect much effective Futurology from cartoons but many of the conceits explored above resonate through all branches of art. The range of possibilties here are iimmense, hovering waiters, mobile homes, video books, but best of all the mechanical dance partners, exemplifying a current of thought to be explored later by Marcel Duchamp after 1910, and in particular in the personnages of the Large Glass. |
