Sir John Melton (d.1640), Astrologaster, or the Figure-Caster ; rather the Arraign- ment of Artlesse Astrologers and Fortune- tellers,'1620 dedicated to the author's father Evan, and containing verses by John Hancocke. The author became Member of Parliament for Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and there are references to his trading in saltpetre and coal. The titlepage uses a familiar sixteenth century visual cliche of the Magician/Adept behind a table giving a performance, fooling the ignorant by foretelling the future. |
