suggestions for MAKING A BOOK

DATE........9 April 2024

A Book? yes indeed

the more systematic you are with
cataloguing, the easier it will be
so you have everything ready to start
composing and printing a book .

A book is sequential - the ideal
to make the reader want to come back
again and again

it has to engage first time then
offer further study if picked up again

I recommend you find a context at the outstart
maybe choose a number, say, 18 examples
maybe lay them out on a flat surface in one line and
try different sequences . You’d be amazed at what happens
when you just try different combinations of image.

One possibility to try is find a restricted body of texts
you could use say on a facing page. No problem
that the images actually came first.

I recommend sifting through short texts of well known
and copyright free sources
e.g. https://www.poetrysoup.com/poems/best/erotic
Find Sappho and Ovid.
is there a Ukranian source you find inspiring?

The sequence could be one of gathering desire
which will give the book a shape.

Or it could be an ambiguous encounter. With a moral.

Once you have your material in text and image then you can
fill in a template

1. Title
2. cover
3. title-page
5. rationale

6- ? examples of your drawings with text opposite
I have a huge amount of materials on Books and their design on
https://www.fulltable.com/vts/b/BOOKS/menux.htm
Find Ariel Poems. A good place to start - a poem and two
prints for each example.

7. FINALE ( this will emerge as you gather material)
How is the book to end so the reader closes it
and feels she/he has been on a journey

Many of these decisions will help you decide
what paper stock to use
what size of paper, what means of reproduction etc

There can be small additions that make it feel special
• it is a limited edition
• it is contained in a box
• it has a ribbon book mark
Commercial printing is now accessible and reasonably cheap.

really, anybody can do this. No big deal. My grand daughter Isla (7)
did a 20pp stapled book for me this Saturday called the
Book of Mysteries.

In your case the key is to find a sequence. and in your first effort
find some short texts.

Even better if those texts were Ukrainian.

best wishes

Chris
