Avondale Mills of Alabama, founded in 1897 by Governor B.B.Comer, "spins the yarn and weaves the fabrics that go into the home for every member of your family." Crockwell produced the majority of scenes from American life, here Avondale children "painted from life by Douglass Crockwell".

The illustration typified his flattening of form and creative tensions between representative elements (probably derived from photographs) and flat patterns. See also Maxfield Parrish for the approach. Crockwell's Avondale Images all measure 19 x 24 cms.

"The Spirit of Play" (No.12), an astonishingly playful composition with some very daring spatial devices. Fenruary 1948.

"An Avondale family symbolizing maturity, loyalty, family stability and security" (No.14), the repetition of physical type and pattern make many of these compositions almost satirical.

"Avondale children greet their father - a symbol of the 7,000 who work at Avondale Mills" (No.9)

"Graduates of the Negro School in an Avondale Community" (No.10).
