Acanthus
( Dr.Frank Hoar, FRIBA 1907 -1978)
With Acanthus we are impressed by the discrepancy between the narrative
and the means used to achieve it - the Piranesian grandeur to achieve
a domestic frisson. His graphic achievement, as you'd expect from a trained
architect, was the creation of a dizzying sense of scale and sustained
encrustation of detail. His PhD was, significantly on the Bavarian baroque. His best cartooning work was done for Punch. There is a well written and comprehensive account of his architectural acheivements and practice in Wikipedia.
Both of
these images are from that magazine, and measure 16 x 23 cms. "Acanthus
was an architect and, as a specialist, able to bring to PUNCH pages a
high degree of specificity, one of the qualities most lacking in the modern
period." R.G.G.Price, A History of Punch Collins London
1957.
