| Page size 15 x 21 cms, Putnam, New York 1904. The de Musset text was originally published in 1864. Bennett (1829-1867) was a prolific and uneven illustrator. Even the awkwardnesses of his drawing, and uncertainties of characterisationm have a presence, even charm. Much of the imagery in this book is highly conventional in its depiction of scale, yet there is a strange unease in the depiction of the nebulopus characters, much more interesting than many of his animal portraits,a nd certainly more than much of his PUNCH work. |
