MOBY DICK - 1930
SALAMINA - 1936 (Chapter Initials)
Salamina
To each chapter of his autobiographical writing of a stay in Greenland,
Kent added an initial with landscape or map. Although the full page lithographic
illustrations of indigenous life suffer from a characteristically sentimental
attitude bordering on the Camp, the chapter initials are very beautiful,
sitting perfectly on the page and combining excellent standards of letter
making with clarity of drawing. The letterforms always sit effectively
against their ground.
We start with two full pages and then a sequence of initals , reproduced
larger than the originals to emphasise their qualities.
Published in 1936 in London.
