| page size is 22 x 27cms. Lawson Wood (1878-1957) was
a one man industry in creating and capitalsing upon his characterisations.
At one time in his life he had a factory making wooden toys based on
them. His work was extremely popular in America and his example served
as a sort of exemplar for the Americans of what constituted British humour. The
Monkeys were his major creation, and Gran'Pop an irascible ape, the
central character. His characterisation is sharp and beautifully drawn,
artful against these superb matte backgrounds which best show off his
control of contour and constant comic invention.
