The Chef is the ideal personification for associations that tempt us - unfettered consumption, extremes of response, an exotic and eccentric charm, and all from within a recognisable uniform that cannot be mistaken for any other profession. Until recently, the chef tended to be portly, and in the 50's it seems to have been obligatory to be bulgy. The Little Chef Brand character was of course not little at all, but obese. This year (2005) it was decided to slim the perky little fellow down a bit as the range of foods available at that restaurant emphasised healthy living and a trim figure.
