On the left is the house called ‘Penmorfa’, in Llandudno, the holiday home where the real Alice Liddell used to stay; the girl for whom Carroll wrote the story.
In the story it is the house that Alice keeps coming back to whenever she wants to escape from it.
Hence its double appearance on both sides of the chess board where you can see her as a solitary pawn.
On the top right here we can see Alice aspiring to be a Queen. And below the White King (having fallen flat on his back).
