The backgrounds for these three illustrations are based on Lear’s own sketches of the locations mentioned in the limericks – Thermopylae, Corsica  and Corfu.
The ‘bewildered Old Man of Corfu’ on the right is a portrait of Lear himself; Corfu being a place where Lear was indeed bewildered and depressed from time to time.
