I have twenty-five years experience as a university lecturer, working in the fields of art, design and architectural history, publishing books and various articles in that time, and also delivering several conference papers. This has given me a wide expertise both in knowledge, and with communicating with people of all backgrounds. I also have a first class honours degree and a doctorate. After leaving the University of Brighton in 1999, I retrained in ICT skills, and obtained CLAIT qualifications and experience in a variety of software programmes. I have been able to combine this with my own academic and teaching experience. I am pursuing my own business as an adviser and consultant to a wide variety of clients, including curators, academics, publishers and other companies engaged in communications of various kinds. To this end, I also have experience in small business practice and methods, and undertake commissions and other projects via the Internet, or through my own research practice.

I have developed a good eye for detail, with the ability to assimilate information quickly and effectively, with extensive proof reading  and copy-writing experience. These have been gained within nationally recognised standards of presentation in previous employment in higher education. This has enabled me to develop the following qualities:

  • Commitment to lifelong learning and development.
  • Encouraging and supporting both student and other groups in learning skills and practice, according to their needs.
  • Organising and maintaining a wide variety of work formats and documentation.
  • Developing working strategies to implement particular material and content.
  • Maintaining a high quality of visual analysis, with reference to both text and graphic imagery.
  • Experience in exhibition design, presentation and curatorship.
  • Ability to participate in teamwork and to develop my own initiatives.
  • Interpreting  varying social, cultural and historical perspectives.
  • Identifying product and development potential in a wider market framework.
  • Editing, archival and research background in a number of different areas.
  • Monitoring and evaluating  organisation structures, and communicative forms and strategies.
  • Skills and experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Quark-express, Photoshop, and further  skills in Director, Flash, Fireworks and Dreamweaver, for website design.

I have extensive experience of different modes of teaching, both in full-time academic work and previous work with the Open University, and am fully conversant with techniques of open (distance) learning, and one-to-one educational practice. I have a professional and personal interest and expertise in many areas of the arts,  and continue to research actively, with a special interests in the fields of travel, tourism and leisure. I am working on a number of my own artistic projects, utilising a number of different software applications. I have close connections with several art galleries and organisations, including the Phoenix Art Centre, the Five-ways Open House Group and the Start Contemporary Gallery. I also work as a volunteer with the Fabrica arts centre in Brighton, and have experience of the book retail trade. I enclose an appendix of my previous experience, for information.

I would be very happy to give detailed personal and academic references on request.
