This database explores the way that issues in the Cold War were expressed on the page through images and typography. When arguments were too complex, very often a picture or even a tone of voice would reinforce opinion that the Government sought to project as policy. Diagrams and Maps were confected to make Congressional hairs stand up on Congressional necks. Too much anxiety could debilitiate the citizenry, too little could be seen as complacency. How do you reconcile the citizenry to death for one and all? When the living will envy the dead... Death will be lingering and appalling. Those who survive will live underground in squalor. I have collected this material for many years and used it in my teaching, reflecting on the way image and text cut through the debates and presented certainties to a reading public. |
