THE NARRATIVE IMPULSE
in EUROPEAN Art
(SEE HUMMEL BENEATH)
When the Brighton MA course (Narrative Illustration/Editorial Design) started in 1989 the very term "Narrative" was an anathema to all right thinking people (usually Fine Artists of a Bo-ho tendancy). Now we are expected as individuals to cultivate our own narratives, pursue one into the future, and recognise the primacy of other people's narratives. Whole nations acquire one at a blink of the eye. It's almost as common a daily reference point as the term "Iconic". Trundling round Art Galleries and Museums I always sought the story as a basis of understanding the manufacturing and the aesthetic pitch of the art object. Nowhere did the direction feel so compatible with what I was as visits to Norway and the National Gallery. The understanding and cultivation of Narrative Art has allowed all manner of other media into the Hallowed Halls of the Fine Art, such as cartoons, posters and animation, enhancing the inclusivity of Image Making. This section should be seasoned with visits to its American and British equivalents, in the general cause of making known neglected imagery that deserves a better fate than being reproduced at the back of the catalogue in black and white. It is my opportunity to introduce you perhaps to Spillaerts, Kolbe and Eckersdorf, while also celebrating the hypnotic familiarities of Caillebotte and Saanredam. The British Nation may lurch to misty off shore isolation but I feel part of this European culture |
section devoted to American art. |
