This whole selection may appear a folly but there are virtues in giving an account of the way popular fiction was visualised for the reading public. No illustration must move far from the accepted delineations in Nash/Pall Mall magazine, as in its American equivalents. Indeed several illustrators represented above were American as indeed several of the stories appeared first in American magazines e.g. Cosmopolitan Magazine (from 1886)e.g. von Schmidt's image to Jung above.

THE ACCEPTED NORMS

Handsome and impeccable figures in romantic tension; Sinister foreigners;exotic locations; accomplished figure drawing; stylised colours and a painterly surface. NASH's peppered the smouldering dramas with throroughly English natrrative illustrations accompany poems and opinion pieces and lavish double page Low reconfigurations of Hogarth (Rake's Progress). For students of English illustration it is fascinating to see the early career of Illingworth and Eric Fraser. Reinforcing the stylised English Rustic we find,as might be expected, a representation of Hilder and Hepple.The prolific Arthur Wragg produced a down-beat feature on Fantasies of escape.

A discovery for me was H.W.Hailstone's multifigured compositions on broad social themes e.g. The Next 25 years.

When the Discriminating turn up their noses at such imagery, I remind them that Marcel Duchamp is quoted as having the utmost respect for the murals of Maxfield Parrish.Nothing could be more perfect, he said wisely.
